Who Needs a Pool?

We do.

Before we booked our guesthouse in Koh Phangan, we debated the merits of staying at a place with a pool. We weren't sure if we wanted to spring for this more expensive option, and thought "we'll have the beach at our doorstep, why would we want a pool?" But in the end we opted for this little treat, and over the past week we have not regretted it one bit.

We love our pool for a variety of reasons:

It keeps the riff raff out (when normally we are the riff raff).

It's a great place to sit and look at the other big pool.

It's a place where brother (Riff) and sister (Raff) put aside differences and can just hang out together...

...and a place where children put aside communication barriers to speak the common language of laughter.

It's a place where Owen is happiest.

It's a place where mama and daddy are the happiest.

It's a place where a few Chang beers makes you think a child throwing competition is a good idea. Remember - combined scoring includes distance AND style!

It's a place where every once in a while you turn around and remember where you are.

It's a place where you can try to undo a year of being inside an office - that colour is known as "Accountant White", and may be available soon at a Benjamin Moore location near you.

And it's a place to wonder where the day went.

We've been snorkelling and hiking and we'll tour the island by motorbike tomorrow, but we've also been happy to just stay put at our pool and enjoy our family time together. So our advice to those families wondering if it's worth it : always get the pool!

  1. Always go pool indeed. You're supposed to try to blend in with all the Euros travelling in Thailand, however. Naish was mighty disappointed not to see you in a banana hammock.

  2. Hey Jeff - plenty of Euros indeed, but a very nice crowd on this island. As for the bathing attire, I do my best not to try and satisfy Brian's weird fetishes.
